The effect of bulkiness of substituents on the chiroptical properties of three poly(phenylacetylenes) bearing amino acid pendants was investigated. The magnitude of CD backbone absorption decreases if the bulky substituent is close to the chiral center. The magnitude also decreases if the substituent is an H-acceptor, suggesting that the helical structure of the polymer is predominantly maintained by hydrogen bonding between the pendants.
