This paper investigates the potential volume reduction of a transformer for a Series Resonant Converter (SRC), using silicon carbide semiconductors, in a Ground Power Unit (GPU) application. Using an optimization based theoretical and empirical transformer design methodology, it is shown that the series resonant transformer volume has a large potential volume reduction below 50-60 kHz operation, but limited potential reduction above these operating frequencies. A 15 kW, 50 kHz transformer is designed and the simulated/modelled efficiency of the full SRC converter, shows a peak efficiency of 98.45 %.
