Abstract : The degradation of pink water compounds in soil was studied. A simulated pink water containing TNT, RDX, HMX and 2,4-DNT was continuously applied to a series of soil columns at different flow rates, with and without carbon supplementation. Concentrations of TNT, RDX, HMX, total organic carbon, nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, pH, oxidation-reduction potential, and biotransformation products were monitored on a weekly basis. The results indicate that land treatment or land farming of pink water should not be considered as a treatment option for pink water. Hazardous biotransformation intermediates and unchanged concentrations of some of the pink water compounds would contaminate groundwaters and soils.
