During the synthesis of the novel compounds (III) (space group P2 1 /c, Z=4) and (V) (P21/m, Z=2) the aromatic ring of toluene (I) is split into C2 and C4 units whereas the ring of m‐xylene (IV) is opened and rearranged with formation of a cyclopropane ring.
