A number of N 4 -hydroxy and N 4 -amino derivatives of 3′-azido-2′,3′-dideoxy-5-methylcytidine have been synthesized and tested for antiviral activity against HIV-1 and HIV-2. The N 4 -phenylamino and N 4 -dimethylamino analogues show marked anti-HIV activity which is comparable to that of AZT.
