In 1938, Harvard historian Crane Brinton first published his influential analysis of four revolutions-the English, American, French, and Russianextracting from them the common themes and mechanisms that united them as individual instances of a single process (Brinton, 1965). Revolution, according to Brinton, had structure, and its course was orderly and predictable.
