A Project-Based Integrated Work/Review Cycle (PBIWR) for Design and Learning of Accelerated Construction Monitoring AbstractTo minimize impact due to travel delay, the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) hasbeen pushing for Accelerated Construction (AC) techniques for public transportationconstruction. In contrast to traditional construction techniques, the AC technology is envisionedby this federal agency to have the potential to generate great savings for the nation byeliminating unnecessary traffic jams. This change in construction philosophy provides a greatopportunity to introduce the advanced concept of full monitoring of construction processes viaembedded sensing technologies. Since this involves both inspection techniques and constructionmanagement, this paper presents an integrated learning and reviewing approach that was appliedto a design project-oriented course content that was offered in both Construction Managementand Structural Monitoring courses. This approach enabled undergraduate students fromEngineering Technology and graduate students from Civil Engineering Departments work andreview each other’s project papers separately, but produce one project outcome. A learningexperience survey was distributed to participated students. The results indicated that the majorityof students had positive interdisciplinary learning experience, and about 18% of studentsexpressed their interests in participating in future research projects. Once implemented, thisproject-based integrated work/review cycle can establish a potentially creative and synergisticenvironment for student learning through interactions between multi-discipline teams. 1
