AF diagnosed after stroke is an important hallmark of recurrent stroke risk. Increasing the low utilization of cardiac monitoring after stroke could identify undiagnosed AF earlier, leading to appropriate oral anticoagulation treatment and a reduction in stroke/TIA recurrence.
Enlarged BGPVS might be a novel risk factor for OAC-related ICH. The strength of this association and potential use in predicting ICH in clinical practice should be investigated in larger cohorts.
We estimate that there will be a substantial healthcare burden in the UK NHS associated with AF, from strokes, bleeds, and mortality over the next decades. If patients are managed with a holistic or integrated care approach based on the ABC pathway, this could prevent strokes and bleeds that equate to substantial NHS healthcare cost reductions, and save lives.
We are very happy to start 2020 with our traditional January Editorial and Editor's Choice,[1] [2] [3] [4] especially as this year commemorates a special date for us. Ten years ago, Thrombosis and Haemostasis endowed itself for the first time with two Editors-in-Chief, one each for Basic and Clinical Science. We are very grateful for this fruitful collaboration and these past 10 years working with you, our authors, readers and reviewers.
