We introduce a novel method revealing hidden bifurcations in the multispiral Chua attractor in the case where the parameter of bifurcation [Formula: see text] which determines the number of spiral is discrete. This method is based on the core idea of the genuine Leonov and Kuznetsov method for searching hidden attractors (i.e. applying homotopy and numerical continuation) but used in a very different way. Such hidden bifurcations are governed by a homotopy parameter [Formula: see text] whereas [Formula: see text] is maintained constant. This additional parameter which is absent from the initial problem is perfectly fitted to unfold the actual structure of the multispiral attractor. We study completely the multispiral Chua attractor, generated via sine function, and check numerically our method for odd and even values of [Formula: see text] from 1 to 12. In addition, we compare the shape of the attractors obtained for the same value of parameter [Formula: see text] while varying the parameter [Formula: see text].
Damage and cyclic fatigue failure under alternating loading in transformation-toughened zirconia ceramics is reviewed and compared to corresponding behavior under quasi-static loading (static fatigue). Current understanding of the role of transformation toughening in influencing cyclic fatigue-crack propagation behavior is examined based on studies which altered the extent of the tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation in MG-PSZ through subeutectoid aging. These studies suggest that near-tip computations of the crack-driving force (in terms of the local stress intensity) can be used to predict crack-growth behavior under constant amplitude and variable-amplitude (spectrum) loading, using spatially resolved Raman spectroscopy to measure the extent of the transformation zones. In addition, results are reviewed which rationalize distinctions between the crack-growth behavior of preexisting, ``long`` (> 2 mm), through-thickness cracks and naturally-occurring, ``small`` (1 to 100 {mu}m), surface cracks in terms of variations in crack-tip shielding with crack size. In the present study, the effect of grain size variations on crack-growth behavior under both monotonic (R-curve) and cyclic fatigue loading are examined. Such observations are used to speculate on the mechanisms associated with cyclic crack advance, involving such processes as alternating shear via transformation-band formation, cyclic modification of the degree of transformation toughening, and uncracked-ligament (or grain) bridging.
An entry from the Cambridge Structural Database, the world’s repository for small molecule crystal structures. The entry contains experimental data from a crystal diffraction study. The deposited dataset for this entry is freely available from the CCDC and typically includes 3D coordinates, cell parameters, space group, experimental conditions and quality measures.

We report a concise, enantioselective total synthesis of (-)-taiwaniaquinone H and the first enantioselective total synthesis of (-)-taiwaniaquinol B by a route that includes asymmetric palladium-catalyzed α-arylation of a ketone with an aryl bromide that was generated by sterically controlled halogenation via iridium-catalyzed C-H borylation. This asymmetric α-arylation creates the benzylic quaternary stereogenic center present in the taiwaniaquinoids. The synthesis was completed efficiently by developing a Lewis acid-promoted cascade to construct the [6,5,6] tricyclic core of an intermediate common to the synthesis of a number of taiwaniaquinoids. Through the preparation of these compounds, we demonstrate the utility of constructing benzylic quaternary stereogenic centers, even those lacking a carbonyl group in the α-position, by asymmetric α-arylation.
This paper aims to gauge the global effect of renminbi revaluation on stock markets. Using data on 12, 300 firms in operating in tradable sectors in 44 economies, we find that expectations of renminbi appreciation reduce the relative stock returns of firms providing components or raw materials to China as inputs for that country's exports. We also find some evidence that expectations of renminbi appreciation reduce the stock prices of financially constrained firms.
Abstract Animal migrations can link ecosystems across space. We discovered an aquatic insect that migrates between a river mainstem and its tributaries, and provides an important trophic subsidy for tributary predators. A mayfly, Ephemerella maculata , rears in a warm, sunlit productive river mainstem, then migrates as adults to cool, shaded unproductive tributaries where they oviposit and die. This migration tripled insect flux into a tributary for 1 month in summer. A manipulative field experiment showed that this E. maculata subsidy nearly tripled the growth of the young of the year steelhead trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) in the recipient tributary over the summer months, and was more important than terrestrial invertebrate subsidies, which have been considered the primary food source for predators in small, forested creeks. By delivering food subsidies from productive but warming river mainstems to cool but food‐limited tributaries, aquatic insect migrations could enhance resilience to cool‐water predators in warming river networks.
