We present a set of simple sufficient conditions for the polyconvexity and coercivity of strainenergy functions for transversely isotropic and orthotropic elastic solids. The formulation is based on appropriate function bases for the right stretch tensor in the polar decomposition of the deformation gradient and furnishes numerical analysts with a priori existence criteria for boundary-value problems.
A scattering of silver: Polyhedral silver nanocrystals display complex and distinct scattering signatures dictated by their shape and size (see picture). The ability to engineer specific plasmon modes should have profound consequences for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, subwavelength optics, and plasmonic transport.
We present the bifurcation analysis of Chua’s circuit equations with a smooth nonlinearity, described by a cubic polynomial. Our study focuses on phenomena that can be observed directly in the numerical simulation of the model, and on phenomena which are revealed by a more elaborate analysis based on continuation techniques and bifurcation theory. We emphasize how a combination of these approaches actually works in practice. We compare the dynamics of Chua’s circuit equations with piecewise-linear and with smooth nonlinearity. The dynamics of these two variants are similar, but we also present some differences. We conjecture that this similarity is due to the central role of homoclinicity in this model. We describe different ways in which the type of a homoclinic bifurcation influences the behavior of branches of periodic orbits. We present an overview of codimension 1 bifurcation diagrams for principal periodic orbits near homoclinicity for three-dimensional systems, both in the generic case and in the case of odd symmetry. Most of these diagrams actually occurs in the model. We found several homoclinic bifurcations of codimension 2, related to the so called resonant conditions. We study one of these bifurcations, a double neutral saddle loop.
Summary We review the existing set of optical/UV/IR observations of Supernova 1993J, concentrating heavily on optical data because these are by far the most plentiful. Some results from theoretical modeling of the observations are also discussed. SN 1993J has provided the best observational evidence for the transformation of a SN from one spectral type to another, thereby providing a link between Type II and Type Ib supernovae (SNe). This has strengthened the argument that SNe Ib (and, by extension, SNe Ic) are core-collapse events. SN 1993J has remained relatively bright for 10 years; its late-time emission comes from the collision of supernova ejecta with circumstellar gas that was released by the progenitor prior to the explosion. The circumstellar material shows strong evidence of CNO processing.
We report the palladium-catalyzed coupling of aryl halides with ammonia and gaseous amines as their ammonium salts. The coupling of aryl chlorides and ortho-substituted aryl bromides with ammonium sulfate forms anilines with higher selectivity for the primary arylamine over the diarylamine than couplings with ammonia in dioxane. The resting state for the reactions of aryl chlorides is different from the resting state for the reactions of aryl bromides, and this change in resting states is proposed to account for a difference in selectivities for reactions of the two haloarenes.
An entry from the Cambridge Structural Database, the world’s repository for small molecule crystal structures. The entry contains experimental data from a crystal diffraction study. The deposited dataset for this entry is freely available from the CCDC and typically includes 3D coordinates, cell parameters, space group, experimental conditions and quality measures.
Two timelines for extinction The Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction that wiped out the nonavian dinosaurs 66 million years ago was correlated with two extreme events: The Chicxulub impact occurred at roughly the same time that massive amounts of lava were erupting from the Deccan Traps (see the Perspective by Burgess). Sprain et al. used argon-argon dating of the volcanic ash from the Deccan Traps to argue that a steady eruption of the flood basalts mostly occurred after the Chicxulub impact. Schoene et al. used uranium-lead dating of zircons from ash beds and concluded that four large magmatic pulses occurred during the flood basalt eruption, the first of which preceded the Chicxulub impact. Whatever the correct ordering of events, better constraints on the timing and rates of the eruption will help elucidate how volcanic gas influenced climate.
