A series of well-defined PS-g-P3HT bottlebrushes was synthesized and the influence of the P3HT chain length on aggregation, crystallinity and electronic properties of brushes was investigated.
We report the application of spectroelectrochemical techniques to compare the hole percolation dynamics of molecular networks of two ruthenium bipyridyl complexes adsorbed onto mesoporous, nanocrystalline TiO(2) films. The percolation dynamics of the ruthenium complex cis-di(thiocyanato)(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid)-(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-tridecyl) ruthenium(II), N621, is compared with those observed for an analogous dye with an additional tri-phenyl amine (TPA) donor moiety, cis-di(thiocyanato)(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid)-(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-bis(vinyltriphenylamine)) ruthenium(II), HW456. The in situ oxidation of these ruthenium complexes adsorbed to the TiO(2) films is monitored by cyclic voltammetry and voltabsorptometry, whilst the dynamics of hole (cation) percolation between adsorbed ruthenium complexes is monitored by potentiometric spectroelectrochemistry and chronoabsorptometry. The hole diffusion coefficient, D(eff), is shown to be dependent on the dye loading on the nanocrystalline TiO(2) film, with a threshold observed at ∼60% monolayer surface coverage for both dyes. The hole diffusion coefficient of HW456 is estimated to be 2.6 × 10(-8) cm(2)/s, 20-fold higher than that obtained for the control N621, attributed to stronger electronic coupling between the TPA moieties of HW456 accelerating the hole percolation dynamics. The presence of mercuric ions, previously shown to bind to the thiocyanates of analogous ruthenium complexes, resulted in a quenching of the hole percolation for N621/TiO(2) films and an enhancement for HW456/TiO(2) films. These results strongly suggest that the hole percolation pathway is along the overlapped neighbouring -NCS groups for the N621 molecules, whereas in HW456 molecules cation percolation proceeds between intermolecular TPA ligands. These results are discussed in the context of their relevance to the process of dye regeneration in dye sensitised solar cells, and to the molecular wiring of wide bandgap inorganic materials for battery and sensing applications.
For decades photochromic molecules have attracted attention for their potential in using light as an external stimulus to change their photophysical properties. Here we report the spectroscopic characterization of two emissive photochromic molecules that are intrinsically fluorescent and that undergo a photocyclization/cycloreversion reaction upon illumination with light in the UV and VIS spectral ranges. For appropriately adjusted illumination intensities the emission can be modulated between the high- and the low-level with a contrast ratio exceeding 80%. The data are in reasonable agreement with the predictions from a simple kinetic model.
We report the influence of the active Grignard monomer formation on the end groups and polydispersity of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) for the catalyst transfer polymerization. The rate of the active Grignard monomer formation of 2,5-dibromo-3-hexylthiophene using t-BuMgCl was studied using 1H NMR. Only in the absence of unreacted/excess t-BuMgCl, polymers with 100% H/Br end groups were formed. If the active Grignard monomer formation was incomplete and thus unreacted t-BuMgCl remained, the end groups depended on the polymerization time; the ratio of H/Br to H/H end groups decreased with increasing time. LiCl was shown to accelerate the active Grignard monomer formation but negatively affects the regioregularity to a small extent. It also increases the molecular weight of P3HT when used in combination with Ni(dppp)Cl2 as a catalyst. Further, MeOH as a quenching reagent was identified to cause chain−chain coupling and hence an increase in the polydispersity. Thus, important parameters influencing the kinetics of the catalyst transfer polymerization were studied, and a series of P3HTs with 100% H/Br end groups and low polydispersities were synthesized by an optimized procedure. These findings are very relevant for extending this polymerization method to new monomers and for the realization of well-defined block copolymers.
A series of low molecular weight dimeric 1,3,5-triazine ethers with high glass transition temperatures is synthesized from 2-(4-fluorophenyl)-4,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-triazine and various bisphenols. The thermal and electrochemical properties of these materials are examined using differential scanning calorimetry and cyclic voltammetry, respectively. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) are in the range of 106−144 °C, and all of them have similar thermal stability and show no weight loss up to 380 °C in thermogravimetric measurements. Some of these dimers form stable glasses which do not recrystallize on annealing at or above the Tg. Cyclic voltammetry studies reveal that these compounds undergo reversible reduction between −2.09 and −2.27 V vs ferrocene/ferrocenium as internal standard which correspond to LUMO values between −2.5 and −2.7 eV, respectively. The application of one of these dimeric ethers as a hole-blocking/electron-transport material in organic light-emitting devices is demonstrated.

We report the synthesis, electrochemical and optical properties of novel 1,3-bis(5-diarylaminothiophen-2-yl)isothianaphthenes obtained by palladium-catalysed amination of 1,3-bis(5-bromothiophen-2-yl)isothianaphthene with diarylamines.
Titanium dioxide solar cells on top of a wide range of substrates, even flexible plastics, are accessible by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of TiO2 by resistive heating of Ti3O5 under partial oxygen pressure. Cells using TiO2 in combination with Cu phthalocyanine on ITO substrates (see Figure) are most effective if the TiO2 layer is thin (15 nm), and if a further perylene dye layer is used to tune the wavelength of light absorption.
