Spider dragline silk has the highest strength among all natural or artificial fibers. This paper is to take full advantage of this property to enhance polyvinyl alcohol nanofibers by adding spider powders in the spun solution by the electrospinning. The obtained spider-based nanofiber shows much higher toughness than its polyvinyl alcohol partner. We also find that the spider-based nanofibers have supercontraction and wetting properties similar to those in the spider silks. This paper sheds a new light on a new trend of nanobiomimetics.

Mathematics is an important tool to dealing with a complex problem, but it might be too abstract and elusive to be directly applied by engineers. This paper shows mathematics should be simple but effective for thermodynamic problems, the simpler is the better. The two-scale fractal is used as an example to show the im-portance of application of mathematics to practical problems, and a fast-slow law is suggested to deal with many discontinuous problems by fractal calculus.
The power function of metabolic rate scaling for an organ is established as B organ ∼ T organ ( D + N / 6 ) / ( D + 1 ) , where B organ is the metabolic rate of the organ, T organ is its mass, D is its fractal dimension of the total cell boundary, and N is its cell’s degree of freedom of motion. This prediction agrees quite well with the experimental data for the brain, liver, heart, and kidneys, and it explains very well the reason why the maximal metabolic rate induced by exercise scales with M 0.86 rather then M 0.75.
Bubble-electrospinning is one of the most straightforward ways to fabricate polymer solution into nanofibers. The key point of the technology is to control bubble size and formation frequency. A modified bubble electrospinning set-up is designed to control the size of polymer bubbles and frequency of bubble formation in the spinning process. A PVA (10wg %) solution is used in the experiment for fabricate polymer solution into nanofibers and superfine nanofibers are obtained with the average diameter of about 200nm.
<p>Taylor series method is simple, and an infinite series converges to the exact solution for initial condition problems. For the two-point boundary problems, the infinite series has to be truncated to incorporate the boundary conditions, making it restrictively applicable. Here is recommended an ancient Chinese algorithm called as Ying Buzu Shu, and a nonlinear reaction diffusion equation with a Michaelis-Menten potential is used as an example to show the solution process.</p>

Genome size (C-value) affects cell size directly and specific metabolic rate indirectly. It has been suggested that the scaling exponents of interspecific metabolic rate allometries are by-products of the evolutionary diversification of C-values within narrow taxonomic groups, challenging the so-called ubiquitous 3/4-law. We question this view and suggest another approach to the problem.
Electrospinning is believed to be the most effective technique to produce micro- and nanofibre membrane which have been applied in various high-tech areas, including biomedical science, filtration, energy storage and electronic/optical devices, etc. A major challenge needing to surmount is the mass production of nanofibre membrane. Previous techniques such as multiple needle electrospinning and needleless electrospinning greatly improve the nanofibre throughput but bring about some problems simultaneously (poor quality of fiber, limit of polymer category). Here we present a novel technique using needle-disk as spinneret to enhance nanofibre throughput and maintain high quality nanofibre. Unlike previous researches of needleless electrospinning, needles on disk provide sites of jet initiation, showing an active and more controllable process of multiple jets generation. Simulation of electric field showed that electric field strongly concentrating on tip of every needle makes it easier to produce nanofibre with finer fiber diameter at relative low voltage. Moreover, this technique is capable of fabricating nanofibre from various materials with high quality as traditional single-needle electrospinning can do. This reliable technology with simple apparatus is not only convenient and efficient for laboratory use but also great practical for industrialization, suggesting profound significance for preparation and application of nano-materials.
In this paper, a Newton-like iteration method is proposed to solve an approximate solution of an algebraic equation. The iteration formula obtained by homotopy perturbation method contains the well-known Newton iteration formula in logic.
In this paper, the mechanism of tension compensator (TC) was analyzed. The effect of TC on properties of Sirofil composite yarn, such as the hairiness property and the property of abrasion-resistance, was studied theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical results agreed very well with the experimental data. It was also shown that the adoption of TC greatly reduced the hairiness of Sirofil composite yarn, and the property of abrasion-resistance was improved enormously.

A new generalized solitary solution of the Jaulent–Miodek equations is obtained using the Exp-function method. By a transformation, the solitary solution can be easily converted into a generalized compacton-like solution. The free parameters in the obtained generalized solutions might imply some meaningful results in physical process.
In this paper, the Exp-function method is used for seeking solitary solutions, periodic solutions, and compacton-like solutions of nonlinear differential equations. The combined KdV–MKdV equation and the Liouville equation are chosen to illustrate the effectiveness and convenience of the proposed method.

Why do wool fibers show excellent advantages in warmth-retaining and many other practical properties? The paper concludes that their hierarchical structure is the key. Using E-infinity theory, its Hausdorff dimension is estimated to be about 4.2325, very close to El Naschie’s E-infinity dimension, 4.2360, revealing an optimal structure for wool fibers.
