In this study, a recently developed metaheuristic optimization algorithm, the Firefly Algorithm (FA), is used for solving mixed continuous/discrete structural optimization problems. FA mimics the social behavior of fireflies based on their flashing characteristics. The results of a trade study carried out on six classical structural optimization problems taken from literature confirm the validity of the proposed algorithm. The unique search features implemented in FA are analyzed, and their implications for future research work are discussed in detail in the paper.

There are many different optimization algorithms. To gain better understanding of such algorithms, we need to study them both mathematically and numerically. This chapter introduces some mathematical foundations for algorithm analysis, including norms, eigenvalues, convergence, computational complexity, and convexity.
The flower pollination algorithm (FPA) is a nature-inspired algorithm for optimization. This chapter introduces the basic ideas of FPA and its demo implementation. Multi-objective optimization is also discussed with applications.
The amount of data available over Internet and World Wide Web is increasing exponentially. Retrieving data that is more close to user's query effectively and efficiently is a challenging task in Information Retrieval (IR) system. Clustering of Documents is one of the solutions to this. Clustering is the process of partitioning a set of objects in such a way that the objects in same cluster are more similar. The number of possible ways in which the documents can be clustered is enormous and this makes the problem to be a combinatorial optimization problem. Nature inspired algorithms are commanding tools to attack this type of problem. In this paper, an attempt has been made to use Cuckoo Search Optimization (CSO) algorithm to solve the problem of document clustering. The CSO algorithm is experimented with standard benchmark dataset, Classic4 dataset. The quality of solutions generated by CSO algorithm in terms of DB Index was compared with K-means algorithm and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm. The results reveal that CSO algorithm is a viable to achieve world class solutions to high dimensional data clustering.
Solitary waves occur in the system of wave propagation in a dispersive energy conserving medium. We show that soliton-like travelling waves arise naturally in the flow of viscoelastic media.

The calculus of variations is closely related to many optimization problems and computational sciences, especially in the formulation of finite element methods. In this chapter, we will briefly touch on these topics.
Technological advances in tea production are critical to meet global demands for tea consumption. To illuminate differences in the scientific and commercial relevance of research programs between major tea-related research organizations around the world, we conducted a bibliometric analysis comparing the scientific outputs, including peer-reviewed publications and patents, of six major research organizations published between January 01, 2008 and July 11, 2020. For this competitive ranking analysis, we examined a number of papers, research topics, academic influence, capacity for development, capacity for collaboration, and capacity for technological innovation. Among the six research organizations, Anhui Agricultural University (in China) had the most publications, while the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Tea Research Institute showed a higher capacity for development. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (in India) and the University of Shizuoka (Japan) both showed high academic influence, while the University of Shizuoka, Tea Research Association Tocklai and National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (Japan) showed a high capacity for collaboration. The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Tea Research Institute applied for the most patents, while the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research applied for the most international patents.
Binomial expansions and series are important for mathematical analysis concerning probability theory, approximation techniques and data modeling. This chapter introduces the fundamentals of binomial theorem, factorials and Pascal's coefficient triangle.
Modern optimisation algorithms are often metaheuristic, and they are very promising in solving NP-hard optimization problems. In this paper, we show how to use the recently developed Firefly Algorithm to solve nonlinear design problems. For the standard pressure vessel design optimisation, the optimal solution found by FA is far better than the best solution obtained previously in literature. In addition, we also propose a few new test functions with either singularity or stochastic components but with known global optimality, and thus they can be used to validate new optimisation algorithms. Possible topics for further research are also discussed.
