A promising method for the manufacture of complex 3D ceramic parts is selective laser sintering (SLS). SLS of alumina components can be done either directly or indirectly. In this article, the indirect method is used by using polystyrene coated alumina particles. One of the methods to produce these alumina powders is dispersion polymerization. In this research, it is described how the alumina powder has been developed and tested. The powder has been characterized to define its processability within the SLS process. Used techniques include SEM (morphology), STA/TGA (overall mass loss), DSC (glass transition temperature T g ), and laser diffraction (particle size distribution). The investigated SLS process parameters were the preheating temperature, laser power, scan spacing, and scan speed. STA/TGA has proven that polystyrene‐coated alumina powders are suitable for SLS process, while DSC results were judged to be a good source of complementary data on preheating temperature of alumina/polystyrene powders. SLS experiments showed that single layer green parts can be produced. By using the optimized SLS parameters, it was demonstrated that different 3D geometries can be produced with the polystyrene coated alumina powders. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Virus-infected mice were significantly more susceptible to the toxic effects of double-stranded ribonucleic acid (RNA) than uninfected mice. A dramatic increase in mortality was observed after injection of either synthetic (polyriboinosinic.polyribocytidylic acid) or natural (mycophage) double-stranded RNA in mice infected with Newcastle disease virus (NDV) or vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). With the exception of endotoxin, interferon inducers other than double-stranded RNA, such as tilorone-hydrochloride and chlorite-oxidized oxyamylose, did not show this increased toxicity in virus-infected animals. The increased susceptibility of virus-infected animals to the toxic effects of double-stranded RNA appears to be related to the levels of interferon induced by the virus infection, either systemically, in the blood stream (after inoculation of NDV), or locally, in the brain (after infection with VSV).

Depending on the spacing of their positive charges, ionenes, a class of quaternary ammonium polymers, increased the interferon-inducing activity of poly(inosinic acid).poly(cytidylic acid) in mouse L-929 cells, whereas they did not enhance poly(inosinic acid).poly(cytidylic acid) induced interferon production in primary rabbit kidney and human skin fibrolast cells.
Abstract Novel TSAO-T analogues, in which the ribofuranosyl moiety has been replaced by an hexofuranosyl sugar moiety, have been prepared and evaluated for their inhibitory effect on HIV-1 replication in cell culture. In contrast to the prototype compound TSAO-T, the hexofuranosyl derivatives proved not active at subtoxic concentrations.
