Abstract A series of novel styrylquinazoline derivatives incorporating urea (VII) or thiourea moieties (IX) (22 examples in all) are designed synthesized and evaluated for their anti‐HIV and antibacterial activities.
Additive manufacturing techniques are getting more and more established as reliable methods for producing porous metal implants thanks to the almost full geometrical and mechanical control of the designed porous biomaterial. Today, Ti6Al4V ELI is still the most widely used material for porous implants, and none or little interest goes to pure titanium for use in orthopedic or load-bearing implants. Given the special mechanical behavior of cellular structures and the material properties inherent to the additive manufacturing of metals, the aim of this study is to investigate the properties of selective laser melted pure unalloyed titanium porous structures. Therefore, the static and dynamic compressive properties of pure titanium structures are determined and compared to previously reported results for identical structures made from Ti6Al4V ELI and tantalum. The results show that porous Ti6Al4V ELI still remains the strongest material for statically loaded applications, whereas pure titanium has a mechanical behavior similar to tantalum and is the material of choice for cyclically loaded porous implants. These findings are considered to be important for future implant developments since it announces a potential revival of the use of pure titanium for additively manufactured porous implants.
Polyadenylated RNA from human peripheral blood lymphocytes and spleen cells, treated with different inducers for IFN-gamma production, was fractionated on denaturing sucrose gradients. Two IFN-gamma mRNA peaks at 12S and 16S were consistently observed. Nucleotide sequence analysis of cDNA clones showed that the 12S IFN-gamma mRNA from the different sources is identical to the gel fractionated 18S IFN-gamma mRNA which gave rise to the IFN-gamma cDNA clone p69 (1). Nucleotide sequence analysis of several IFN-gamma cDNA clones showed the presence of a CGA (Arg) codon at position 140 of mature IFN-gamma in contrast with the CAA (Gln) codon, which is found in p69 (1). Specifically primed cDNA extension on total induced polyadenylated RNA revealed the presence of a single mRNA species having a 5' untranslated region of 125-130 nucleotides. The nucleotide sequence of this region has been obtained. These data suggest that a single human IFN-gamma gene, which has very little polymorphism, gives rise to a single size class of mRNA.

Purpose – This paper seeks to investigate the possibility of producing medical or dental parts by selective laser melting (SLM). Rapid Manufacturing could be very suitable for these applications due to their complex geometry, low volume and strong individualization.Design/methodology/approach – The SLM‐process has been optimized and fully characterized for two biocompatible metal alloys: Ti‐6Al‐4V and Co‐Cr‐Mo. Mechanical and chemical properties were tested and geometrical feasibility, including process accuracy and surface roughness, was discussed by benchmark studies. By developing a procedure to fabricate frameworks for complex dental prostheses, the potential of SLM as a medical manufacturing technique has been proved.Findings – Optimized SLM parameters lead to part densities up to 99.98 percent for titanium. Strength and stiffness, corrosion behavior, and process accuracy fulfil requirements for medical or dental parts. Surface roughness analyses show some limitations of the SLM process. Dental frame...
The antifungal and antibacterial properties of a series of 70 diarylamidine derivatives were evaluated. Several of these compounds exhibited considerable antimicrobial potency. A survey of the structure-activity relationship demonstrated that minor structural variations resulted in significant changes of antimicrobial activity. In general, the structural features required for antifungal activity coincided with those required for antibacterial activity. Both the antifungal and the antibacterial properties of the diarylamidines depended on the presence and the positions, of both amidino groups, on the nature of the central bridge connecting the two aryl moieties, and on the nature of these aryl residues (preferably indole). The most active compound was evaluated for its activity against Candida albicans infection in mice.

Now more than 50 years after interferon was discovered, in 1957, by Isaacs and Lindenmann, this quinquagenarian has evidently come to age. Its major indications for clinical use are, for interferon-alpha, now mostly used in its pegylated form, the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and chronic hepatitis C, the latter generally in combination with ribavirin; and for interferon-beta, the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). Of quintessence in the 50 years with interferon has been the cloning of interferon-alpha and -beta in 1980, which not only proved its identity, but also laid the basis for its application in the treatment of hepatitis (B and C) and multiple sclerosis, respectively.
