OBJECTIVE—Sleep habits have been associated with risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and metabolic disturbances, but the mechanisms underlying these associations have yet to be fully elucidated. We aim to determine whether sleep duration and/or snoring are associated with biomarkers of CVD in women with type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS—We studied 935 women aged 43–69 years enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study cohort with type 2 diabetes who had no history of documented coronary heart disease or stroke in 1990. Information on sleep duration and snoring frequency was collected in 1986 from mailed questionnaires, and biomarkers of CVD were measured from blood samples taken in 1989–1990. RESULTS—Longer sleep duration was associated with increased levels of C-reactive protein after adjusting for age, BMI, lifestyle factors, family history of diabetes, glycemic control, and medication use (P = 0.05). HDL was decreased with short and long sleep duration among normotensive (P = 0.02) but not hypertensive women. More frequent snoring was directly associated with triglycerides (P = 0.02) and inversely associated with HDL cholesterol (0.03) and adiponectin (P = 0.03) in multivariate-adjusted analyses. CONCLUSIONS—The associations of sleep duration and snoring with lipid profile, hormone measures, and/or inflammatory markers may partially explain the previously reported relationship between sleep habits and cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.
Selective targeting and modulation of distinct cell types and neuron subtypes is central to understanding complex neural circuitry and could enable electronic treatments that target specific circuits while minimizing off-target effects. However, current brain-implantable electronics have not yet achieved cell-type specificity. We address this challenge by functionalizing flexible mesh electronic probes, which elicit minimal immune response, with antibodies or peptides to target specific cell markers. Histology studies reveal selective association of targeted neurons, astrocytes, and microglia with functionalized probe surfaces without accumulating off-target cells. In vivo chronic electrophysiology further yields recordings consistent with selective targeting of these cell types. Last, probes functionalized to target dopamine receptor 2 expressing neurons show the potential for neuron-subtype–specific targeting and electrophysiology.
Alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on a mercury surface are used to build a junction consisting of two opposing mercury surfaces with interposed SAMs: Hg-SAM/SAM-Hg. The liquid mercury surface provides a support for the SAM that is smooth, compliant, free of defects, and without the incommensurate lattice properties that characterize solid metal surfaces. The thickness of the dielectric (∼30–90 Å) in this junction can be easily changed by using alkanethiols with different lengths. From capacitance measurements, a dielectric constant of 2.7±0.3 is calculated for the SAMs. The conductivity of SAMs on the Hg surface is σ=6±2×10−15 Ω−1 cm−1, a value close to that of bulk polyethylene. The junction sustains an electric field of 6 MV/cm.

In this paper we solve the elasticity problem of two elastic half spaces that are joined together over a region that does not differ much from a circle, i.e., the problem of an external planar crack leaving a nearly circular uncracked connection. The method we use is based on the perturbation technique developed by Rice (1985) for solving the elastic field of a crack whose front deviates slightly from some reference geometry. Quantities such as crack opening displacement and stress intensity factor are derived in detail to the first order of accuracy in the deviation of the shape of the connection from a circle. In addition, some results such as the crack face weight functions and Green’s functions for a perfectly circular connection are also discussed under various boundary conditions at infinity. The formulae derived are used to study the configurational stability problem for quasistatic growth of an external circular crack. The results, derived when the crack front is perturbed from circular in a harmonic wave form and is subjected to axisymmetric loading, suggest that a perturbation of wavenumber higher than one is configurationally stable under all boundary conditions at infinity. The perturbation with wavenumber equal to one, which corresponds to a translational shift of the geometric center of the circular connection, turns out to be configurationally stable if any rotation in the remote field is suppressed and configurationally unstable if there is no such restraint.
