This article reviews the most recent progress in the synthesis of polar-surface dominated semiconducting and piezoelectric ZnO nanostructures: including nanosprings, nanohelices, nanorings, nanobows and nanodisks. These structures were formed by self-assembly of polar nanobelts/nanowires as driven by minimizing electrostatic energy owing to spontaneous polarization. The nanostructures could have novel applications in optoelectronics, sensors, transducers and resonators.
These 10 grand challenges may have major breakthroughs, research, and/or socioeconomic impacts in the next 5 to 10 years.
Interface microstructures of BaTiO3/LaA1O(3) grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) are studied using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Interface dislocations in BaTiO3/LaAlO3 have been shown to be directly linked up with the 90 degrees domain boundaries in BaTiO3. This association is a result of strain relief due to a phase transformation when cooled down from the growth temperature. The Burgers vector of the interface dislocations is [010]. In this letter, the authors directly observed the zinc-blende (ZB) ZnO core in the initial formation of wurtzite (WZ) ZnO tetrapods. The formation of the wurtzite (011¯3) twined nanowires is proposed based on the ZB core. Simple bonding density calculation shows that the wurtzite nanowires with {011¯0} side surfaces have the lowest surface energy. A favorable choice of WZ phase over ZB when forming nanostructures is likely to be a result of surface energy minimization. This could be the reason that ZnS nanowires take WZ rather than ZB.
Background and Aim: The significance of serum gamma glutamyltransferase activity and its dynamics have not been well investigated in Asian patients with idiopathic neonatal hepatitis. This study aimed to explore the significance in Mainland China. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed in 38 cases with a diagnosis of idiopathic neonatal hepatitis. Their prognosis was compared between low or high gamma glutamyltransferase groups, and the mechanics of biochemical parameters were analysed. Results: Poor prognosis was found in 5 out of 6 patients with low gamma glutamyltransferase, compared to 3 out of 32 patients with high gamma glutamyltransferase (P=0.001). Dynamic analysis found that serum gamma glutamyltransferase levels gradually rose to a peak and then normalised along with a remission of jaundice in patients with good prognosis. However, the serum gamma glutamyltransferase level was consistently low in spite of the fluctuations of bilirubin and aminotransferases level in 5 cases with poor prognosis. The gamma glutamyltransferase level was high at presentation and then decreased along with their clinical deterioration in the other 3 cases with poor prognosis. Conclusions: Gamma glutamyltransferase can be used as a prognostic parameter in Chinese infants with intrahepatic cholestasis. Serum gamma glutamyltransferase being consistently low or decreased along with jaundice persistence or deterioration predicts poor prognosis.
